Build Your Own Krenov-Style Wooden Block or Smoothing Plane!
There's just something special about working with a custom-made wooden hand plane. Ron Hock agrees and that's why he designed this basic Krenov-style, flat-bottom wooden plane kits that are both simple and elegant. These precision-made kits provide a quick, sure way to realize the joy of using a handmade wooden plane without having to engineer it from scratch. Accurately milled from Bubinga or Jatoba to eliminate the need for an additional sole plate, the custom planes that you'll build from these kits are a joy to use. Both fits comfortably in your hand and will glide through any wood you throw at them.
The handy Block Plane (101-603) comes with a 1" wide 3/32” thick blade, when finished the plane ends up approx. 6" long and trims down to 5" or less depending on your needs. Kurt made the one pictured here at 5-7/8" - a convenient size for an apron pocket.
The Beautiful Smoothing Plane Kit (101-605) Includes a 1-1/2” wide 3/16” thick blade and includes a chip breaker and can be shaped to your liking anywhere from 6” to 11” in overall length, giving you the ability to create the perfect plane for smoothing projects large or small.
Both kits come complete with an O1 High Carbon Steel Hock Plane Iron. All you need is a drill, some clamps, glue, a knife to adjust the throat, sandpaper (or plane) to true the sole, and a means of sharpening the iron. The Hock blade sharpens very easily to a super fine edge and cuts through any grain with ease. The High carbon (O1) steel sharpens quickly and holds a consistently sharp edge. The Iron comes with a hollow ground bevel to make initial sharpening quick and easy. These Hock kits are ideal for the novice as well as the professional woodworker who wants a premium wood plane that can be shaped to your specific needs and liking.
Part Number 101-653 is a replacement Iron and Chip Breaker Combo for the smoothing Plane and Part Number 101-660 is a replacement Iron for the Block Plane kit. We offer these irons separately for those that would like to try their hand at making a Krenov style plane of their own from scratch and only need the Iron to complete the project.
