Antistatic PVC hose incorporates a conductive layer or embedded wire that dissipates the static charge generated by fast-moving particles inside the hose. Standard PVC flex hose can build up a significant static charge that causes dust to cling to the interior walls and can produce an uncomfortable — or in extreme cases, hazardous — discharge. Antistatic hose is recommended for systems handling fine dry dust at high velocity.

Urethane hose is significantly more flexible and crush-resistant than standard PVC flex hose. It does not kink or crack when routed around tight corners, and it springs back to round after being stepped on or pinched — important for hose connections at portable tools that move around the shop. It is also more abrasion-resistant at connection points.

Use antistatic hose in place of standard PVC flex hose, and install a grounding kit that runs a wire from the hose or duct system to a grounded electrical outlet or building ground point. Grounding gives accumulated static charge a safe path to discharge continuously rather than building to a shock.

A cyclone separator is installed between the tool hose and the collector, before the filter. It uses centrifugal force to spin heavy chips and debris out of the airstream and drop them into a collection container, before that debris reaches the collector filter. Hose clamps wrap around the outside of the hose at a fitting connection and tighten to create an airtight, pull-resistant joint. Wire hose clamps are standard for round dust collection hose and tighten with a screwdriver or nut driver. The slotted band hose clamp is easier to tighten on oval or irregular fittings where a wire clamp may slip.

Every foot of hose and each fitting adds resistance that reduces airflow at the tool. As a general rule, keep individual tool hose runs as short as practical — typically under 8–10 feet for small-tool connections. For longer runs, use the largest diameter hose the tool accepts, minimize bends, and ensure no partial kinks exist in the hose. A cyclone separator adds some resistance, so account for it in long runs.

A hose hanger mounts to the wall or ceiling and keeps hose coiled off the floor when not in use. Floor-level hose is a trip hazard and gets driven over by carts and machinery, which accelerates hose wear. Hanging the hose also prevents kinking from storage in tight coils.
