Ebony Mortise & Marking Combination Gauge
Marking gauges are great for layout work in your shop because they're many times more accurate than thicker pencil lines. But the advantage of scribing doesn't end there; a scribed line pre-scores your wood, making final cuts with your hand or power tools more crisp and clean by eliminating unsightly tearout. But wait, there's more! When you use a scribed layout line you create a very fine reference point for starting your chisel, hand saw or power tool cut. You won't have the "which side of the pencil line should I start on" question that inevitably creeps into your head when working with a pencil layout line.
This 6-1/4" long Ebony wood and brass gauge features a single marking pin on one side so you can use it as a regular scribing gauge and a double pin setup on the other for simultaneously marking both sides of a mortise. The hardened alloy marking pins are very sharp and score your material beautifully, even against the grain. Use the large reference fence to set your scribe line in the exact location needed, then lock in place with the hefty brass thumb screw. The single pin side is for marking accurate scribe lines while the double knife side is used for mortise layout. This premium Ebony wood gauge uses a threaded rod with a brass thumbscrew for super accurate and easy pin-slide adjustment on the mortise side. You turn the thumbscrew to increase or decrease the distance between the pins.
Features include:
- Solid Ebony wood and brass construction
- Brass rubbing strips and brass wear plug in the head
- 6-1/4" overall length
- Fine craftsmanship and solid feeling in your hand
- Accurate thumbscrew for setting mortise pin width
Precision Starts Here: Why Our Marking & Mortise Gauge Belongs in Your Shop
When it comes to precision in woodworking, the difference between a perfect joint and a poor fit often begins with your layout lines. That’s why our selection of Marking & Mortise Gauge is designed to give you the accuracy and control you need to work with confidence.

Unlike thick pencil marks that leave you second-guessing (on the left)—"Which side of the line do I cut?"—our gauge uses ultra-sharp scribing pins to lay down crisp, fine lines that are easy to follow with a chisel, saw, or router (on the right). These scribe lines act as exact visual and tactile guides, helping you start every cut in exactly the right place.

Crafted from rich Ebony hardwood and gleaming brass, this 6-1/4" tool isn’t just functional—it’s a work of art. On one side, a single marking pin handles your straight scribe lines with pinpoint accuracy. Flip it over, and the double marking pins are ready for mortise and tenon layouts.

The two pins can close to create a ¼" gap, or expand to be 2” apart, as shown above.

The hardened-alloy pins stay razor-sharp and effortlessly score across or with the grain.

And with the adjustable brass fence, you can set your layout to the exact measurement you need and lock it in securely using the hefty, knurled brass thumb screw.

Whether you're marking dovetails, mortises, or fine joinery, this gauge delivers the precision that elevates your craft. Say goodbye to guesswork and hello to cleaner cuts, tighter joints, and more successful builds.
Mark smart. Cut clean. Build better—with our premium Marking & Mortise Gauge.
