Build Your Own Krenov-Style Wooden Block Plane!
There's just something special about working with a custom-made wooden hand plane. Ron Hock agrees and that's why he designed this basic Krenov-style, flat-bottom wooden Block plane that is both simple and elegant. This precision made kit provides a quick, sure way to realize the joy of using a hand made wooden plane without having to engineer it from scratch. Accurately milled from Bubinga to eliminate the need for an additional sole plate, the custom plane that you'll build from this kit is a joy to use. It fits comfortably in your hand and will glide through any wood you throw at it. This handy Block Plane comes with a 1" wide blade, ends up approx. 6" long and trims down to 5" or less depending on your needs. Kurt made the one pictured here at 5-7/8" - a convenient size for an apron pocket.
Complete with a High Carbon steel Hock Plane Iron, all you need is a drill, some clamps, glue, a knife to adjust the throat, sandpaper (or plane) to true the sole, and a means of sharpening the iron. The Hock blade sharpens very easily to a super fine edge and cuts through any grain with ease. We actually prefer this steel over the harder A2 steel since it sharpens much quicker and holds a consistently sharp edge. We also hollow bevel grind these blades to make sharpening quicker, but you can do them however works best for you. This Hock kit is ideal for the novice as well as the professional woodworker who wants a premium wood plane but can't find the time to design and make another one (or two).
